Passenger Activity Increases at Port Columbus in March, First Quarter
COLUMBUS – First quarter statistics show an increase in passengers at Port Columbus International Airport while cargo activity is down at Rickenbacker International Airport. Statistics released at today’s meeting of the Columbus Regional Airport Authority Board of Directors show that in March Port Columbus had a 5.6 percent increase in passengers compared to the previous year. A total of 559,612 passengers traveled through Port Columbus in March compared to 526,875 in March 2009. Year-to-date 1,427,837passengers have used Port Columbus, up 2.5 percent from
2009. “The combination of good weather, a recovering economy and strong spring-break travel helped to boost March passenger activity at Port Columbus,” explained David Whitaker, Vice President of Business Development & Communications. “We’re encouraged by the increased level of passenger activity during the first quarter of 2010 after a couple of difficult years.” At Rickenbacker International Airport over 12.7 million pounds of cargo moved through the airport in March for a 7.7 percent decrease compared to March 2009. Year-to-date cargo numbers reflect the movement of over 36.1 million pounds, which is down 6.9 percent from the previous year. Port Columbus provides 150 daily departures to 33 airports. The ten air carriers at Port Columbus include Air Canada Jazz, AirTran, American, Continental, Delta, Midwest, Southwest, United, US Airways and seasonal service by USA3000. As a cargo-dedicated airport, Rickenbacker International Airport is located within the Rickenbacker Inland Port, a multi-modal logistics hub known internationally for its impressive network of freight forwarders, cargo airlines, trucking companies, an intermodal facility and a Foreign-Trade Zone.
