Port Columbus Passenger Activity Continues To Stabilize

COLUMBUS – Passenger activity at Port Columbus International Airport showed a slight increase in April while cargo activity was down at Rickenbacker International Airport.

Statistics released at today’s meeting of the Columbus Regional Airport Authority Board of Directors show that in April Port Columbus had a 0.8 percent increase in passengers compared to the previous year. A total of 529,496 passengers traveled through Port Columbus in April compared to 525,223 in April 2009. Year-to-date 1,957,333 passengers have used Port Columbus, up two percent from 2009.

“We’re encouraged to see passenger traffic continue to stabilize at Port Columbus after a difficult national economy negatively impacted travel in 2008 and 2009,” said David Whitaker, Vice President of Business Development & Communications.

At Rickenbacker International Airport over 13 million pounds of cargo moved through the airport in April for a 5.5 percent decrease compared to April 2009. Year-to-date cargo numbers reflect the movement of over 49 million pounds, which is down 6.6 percent from the previous year.

Port Columbus provides 150 daily departures to 33 airports. The ten air carriers at Port Columbus include Air Canada Jazz, AirTran, American, Continental, Delta, Midwest, Southwest, United, US Airways and seasonal service by USA3000. A cargo-dedicated airport, Rickenbacker International Airport is located within the Rickenbacker Inland Port, a multi-modal logistics hub known internationally for its impressive network of freight forwarders, cargo airlines, trucking companies, an intermodal facility and a Foreign-Trade Zone. FedEx, UPS, Evergreen, Kalitta and Southern Air, among others move cargo through the international airport.
