June Brings Increase in Activity at Port Columbus, Rickenbacker

COLUMBUS – Passenger activity at Port Columbus International Airport increased in June while cargo activity jumped 31 percent at Rickenbacker International Airport.

Statistics released at today’s meeting of the Columbus Regional Airport Authority Board of Directors show that in June Port Columbus had a 1.9 percent increase in passengers compared to the previous year. A total of 596,137 passengers traveled through Port Columbus in June compared to 585,057 in June 2009. Year-to-date 3,090,227 passengers have used Port Columbus, up 2 percent from 2009.

At Rickenbacker International Airport over 12.8 million pounds of cargo moved through the airport in June for a 31 percent increase compared to June 2009. Year-to-date cargo numbers reflect the movement of more than 75 million pounds, which is down one percent from the previous year.

“Increased activity by FedEx and continued growth in freight from Asia account for the significant jump in last month’s cargo activity at Rickenbacker International Airport,” explained David Whitaker, Vice President of Business Development & Communications. “We remain encouraged that the increase in activity at Rickenbacker and Port Columbus indicates the aviation industry is stabilizing after the national economy and aviation industry suffered financial setbacks in 2008 and 2009.”

Port Columbus provides 150 daily departures to 33 airports. The ten air carriers at Port Columbus include Air Canada Jazz, AirTran, American, Continental, Delta, Midwest, Southwest, United, US Airways and seasonal service by USA3000. A cargo-dedicated airport, Rickenbacker International Airport is located within the Rickenbacker Inland Port, a multi-modal logistics hub known internationally for its impressive network of freight forwarders, cargo airlines, trucking companies, an intermodal facility and a Foreign-Trade Zone. FedEx, UPS, Evergreen, Kalitta and Southern Air, among others move cargo through the international airport.
